How to Change Brake Pads + Tools You’ll Need for the Job

Whether you work in a body shop or are a car enthusiast, at some point, you’ll have to change the brake pads. Here are a few beginner tips for those just starting out:

- Tools Needed:
- Break assortment parts
- Gloves
- Lug wrench
- Socket wrench
- C-Clamp
- Jack
- Brake pads
- Brake fluid
- Retaining clip
- Remove the Wheel
- Using the lug wrench, loosen lug nuts but don’t remove
- Jack up the car
- Fully remove the lug nuts from the wheel
- Remove wheel
- Lift the Caliper
- Remove the bolts locking in the caliper
- Remove or lift the caliper, revealing the brakes
- Do not disconnect any of the brake lines
- Check wear and tear on the brake pads
- 1/8th or less friction means it’s time to change
- Replace the Brake Pads
- Old brake pads can easily be removed and the new ones replaced
- Replace the old retaining clips with new ones
- New brake pads generally come with retaining clips
- Replace the Caliper
- Once the brake pads are in place, the pistons need to be adjusted for the new brake pads
- Use C-Clamp or other tool
- Retracting pistons can lead to an increase in brake fluid levels. If so, remove some fluid
- Lower or replace the caliper and reinstall the bolts holding it in place
- Once the brake pads are in place, the pistons need to be adjusted for the new brake pads
- Final Steps
- Replace the wheel
- Follow the above steps for the other brake pad
