How to Fix a Blown Fuse in a Car

Whether you’re an expert or beginner where car maintenance is concerned, a blown fuse can be frustrating. But with the right know-how, changing any car’s blown fuse will be a walk in the park, no matter your skill level. Believe it or not, fuses are designed to break on purpose to prevent a serious electrical issue, so replacing blown fuses quickly and rightly is important.

  1. Find the fuse panel and remove cover
    1. Each make / model varies. Check the car manual to find the exact location.
    2. Found in 1 of 3 places: 
      1. Under steering wheel
      2. Engine compartment
      3. Trunk
  2. Find Blown Fuse and remove
    1. Reviewing the fuses, find any fuse that might have damage or is black on the inside. 
    2. Remove using hands or pliers. 
  3. Replace Fuse
    1. Check amperage of fuse and ready replacement in manual or diagram on inside of cover.
    2. Note: Ensure amperage is accurate when replacing so as to not cause electrical issues.
  4. Check If It Works
    1. Start the car to determine if the replacement fuse fixes the original issue
    2. If the replacement fuse blows, then it’s more than the fuse and needs a more detailed analysis.
  5. Expert Tip:
    1. Keep fuses of different amps on hand in the event of blown fuses in the future.
